Polyesterday creeps onto the sound system while I'm still going off with someone about fluid sexuality. By the time I get him to shut up the band has taken the stage, the video projection is rolling, and I've jett'd into the fold for a better view and sonic position... not to mention a closer inspection of some WAY HOT boys!
The lead singer is wearing a suit and all i can think of is him sweating like crazy in that monkey outfit. As he cranks out Polyesterday the whole audience starts moving to his groove! And by the time the song is half over the whole audience is jumping and swaying to this Icelandic group's take on postambienttechnotriphop and they sound FINE!!!
I've heard the album once and was totally diggin' their sound. It's not abrasive and certainly has soul. It's not techno but largely synth driven. You know, I believe this band is the Village People for the 90's. They got camp sensibilities, three lead singers, a lead guitar, and some of the slamminest dance moves this side of the pacific! I couldn't stop moving throughout the entire show... although, they had me really going a few times and then pulled the beat out from under me!
Their stage presence was excellent, they worked the audience and had some incredible visuals to go with the music. It was a hybrid of video, slides, and text that had me captivated. Dis was da shit! I wish I had done those projections.
Did I mention that the lead singer slowly disrobed over the course of the night! So by the time the show was half way over his underwear was popping out of his suit pants and his nipples were bouncing in perfect harmony to the beat. I swear!
And speaking of sexuality these people were living it. Omni-sexual, bi-sexual, heterosexual, homosexual... and just plain sexual. Mr Tekko (however you spell it) was all over the place and the crowd was just eating it up. His moves were devo-lution disco in a polyester shirt.
If you get a chance to see this band I highly recommend it. They are on tour in North America until August 8, 1997. And the Polydistortion [4AD] is a must have on my list and it should be on yours!
